Lionel Cowen was an accomplished painter who worked between c.1869 and 1888 in England, and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Little is known of this artist, however he is thought to have exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institute and the Grosvenor Gallery, London.
His paintings are highly romantic, often depicting beautifully dressed young women with flowers. He arrived in New South Wales in 1889 and exhibited eight paintings in the annual exhibition of the Art Society of New South Wales the same year. Cowen is thought to have departed Australia around 1902.
His work is represented in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
